Never Worry Again About Juicing A Beet With These 3 Easy Methods

The humble beet was not even known to be edible in the historical times when they ate only the beet greens. If it weren't for the Romans in the 16th century, we would still be only eating the greens. In fact, beet was used as the most important source to make sugar during the time of Napolean. But the beet is more than just its sugar about which I will tell you in a bit.

Before we analyze the beet in-depth. Let’s get to the topic at hand. It is easy to juice a beet, even if you don’t have a juicer. Yes, you read that right! I am fully aware of the fact that a beet is not pulpy like an orange where you only need your bare hands. Not to mention the fact that everything stains purple when you’re working with beets.

That being said, the beet is so jam packed with goodness, that getting the most out of it is the only way to consume this awesome vegetable.​

Things You Will Need

  • Blender/ Juicer/ Grater
  • Strainer
  • Cheesecloth
  • A pair of plastic or rubber gloves
  • Cutter board
  • Tall serving glasses
  • Sugar or honey (optional)
  • A few mint leaves

1. Anytime Beet Juice

Serves 1​

  • 1 Beet
  • 1 lime

2. Breakfast Beet Juice

Serves 1

  • 1 beet
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 orange

3. Summer Beetroot Juice

Serves 1

  • 1 beet
  • A quarter of a pineapple

Step-by-step Instructions

Beet juice can be really strong for first timers and even so for those who are used to it. That is why it is always juiced with another fruit and diluted appropriately. Below I will show you how to do this in a step-by-step manner with pictures too.

1. Prepare The Beet

The first step is to clean and cut the beet. But before you start, wear your gloves if you don’t want any stains on your fingers and nails. The gloves will also help you clean your cutter board and other things that have the beet juice on them.

Also use a big chopper board in case you have a light colored counter-top. In case you don’t have a big chopper board, simply lay a newspaper under your cutting board to contain the mess.

Step 1 –Cut The Stem​

Fresh beets always come with the stem. Cut of the stem and use of a sharp knife cut a small portion of the top to completely remove any traces of the stem.

Step 2 – Wash​

Also, it is always the best to choose organic produce that are free from pesticides. But if you are unable to get organic beets, you can wash them with plenty of water to remove the pesticides.

Alternatively you could also let them sit in a bath of vinegar and water or use vegetable cleaning soap.​

Step 3 – Peel

Next carefully peel the skin of the beet with a peeler or a knife. Both beet stems and beet greens can be used for preparing the juice.

However, they are not as sweet as the root and so it’ best avoided.

I personally do not like the taste of the stem or the greens but they do have a lot of nutrients in case you are health conscious.

Step 4 - Cube The Beet​

Place the washed beet on the chopping board and cut them into medium sized cubes to get them ready for the juicing step.

If you are going to use a juicer, then it is sufficient to just quarter them or cut them according to the size of the feeder tube.​

But if you are going to use the grater, cutting them into halves will give you a large piece that is good enough to grip.​


2. The juicing step

Method 1 – Using a Juicer

If you have a juicer at home, then it makes your job easy as it will press out every last drop of the goodness. However, you will have to clean the equipment after use, which can be quite a task depending on the type of juicer you have.

Step 1 – Get The Juicer Ready​

Set-up your juicer with the right attachments. This is very important because, beets are hard and can ruin your equipment if you don’t use them right. Keep the collecting tub properly in place if your does not have an in-built space for it. You don’t want your entire counter filled with red juice.​

Step 2 - Feed The Cubes Through a Juicer

Slowly add the beet cubes and press down with the safety pusher. Transfer the juice to a tall glass.​

Step 3 – Sip The Juice

Squeeze half a lime into the juice and stir it well. Add a spoonful of sugar or honey if you like your juice sweeter. Garnish with some mint leaves and enjoy your juice. You can even quick chill it in the freezer for 5 minutes or add ice cubes if you like.

Method 2 – Using a Blender

​Even if you don’t have a juicer at home, most kitchens are usually equipped with a blender. Don’t think I am going to give you a recipe for a smoothie. You can get pure juice even with a blender. I will show you how in the following steps.

Step 1 – Add The Beet Cubes

In your blender add all the beet cubes and half a cup of water, to begin with. This is because beets are hard and will need some liquid to move them around inside the blender.

Step 2- Squeeze The Lime

Cut a lime in half and squeeze the juice directly into the blender. Blenders can cause your juice to look pale. But when you add the lime juice during the juicing step it helps improve the color of the juice. You will get a result similar to that of a juicer.

Step 3 – Blend

Pulse the cubes bit by bit until they start to break down into tiny pieces. Then you can blend on high until it is smooth. If you think it is too thick you can add a little more water to it.

Step 4 – Strain With a Cheesecloth And Strainer

Line a strainer with a piece of cheesecloth to completely cover it. Place this over a bowl. Now pour the beet puree into the cheesecloth and wait for the liquid to strain through. You can tap on the strainer to help things go faster.

Once most of the liquid has passed through the cloth, grab the corners of the cheesecloth and twist it. This will squeeze out any remaining liquid in the puree. You can even sprinkle some water to the puree and squeeze out whatever is remaining.

Step 5 - Enjoy your juice​

Transfer the juice from the bowl to a tall glass and add a spoon of sugar or honey if desired. Stir well and enjoy the goodness. Refrigerate for 30 minutes before drinking if you like it chilled.

Method 3 – Using a grater

If you don’t have either a juicer or a blender you can still juice a beet with the help of a grater. It is not as difficult as it sounds as you will see in the steps below.

Step 1 –Grate the beets

Use either a cheese grater or a box grater to grate the beet pieces. You can do this on your cutter board or directly into a large bowl. Be careful as you grate the pieces as graters can easily scrape your skin. Also this method can stain your hands badly, so if you don’t want that to happen make sure you have your gloves on.​

Step 2 – Add water

Take the grated beet in the bowl and add half a cup of water to it. At this point you can even use a pestle to grind and get more juice out of it.​

Step 3 – Strain with a cheesecloth and strainer​

Place a piece of cheesecloth over a strainer. Keep this on a bowl for collecting the juice. Pour the grated beet and water mixture into the cheesecloth and wait for the juice to collect in the bowl below.​

Once all the liquid has passed through, carefully grab the corners of the cheesecloth and squeeze it to remove the excess liquid.

Step 4 – Enjoy the juice​

Pour the juice into a serving glass. Squeeze a lime into the juice and garnish with some mint leaves. If you like your juice very sweet, then you can add a teaspoon of sugar or honey and stir it well. Enjoy the juice as it is or if you like it chilled add a few ice cubes.​

3. Other yummy variations

I love my plain beet juice with a squeeze of lime, but sometimes just to add a twist to my recipe I like to blend it with other fruits. Below are two of my popular recipes that is a hit with my guests.

Method 1- Breakfast beet juice

Who doesn’t like a glass of orange juice in the morning? But what if you could get more vitamins and health out of your morning juice? Here is my super-yummilicious recipe that even kids will love.

Preparation

  • Wash the orange, carrot and beetroot thoroughly to remove all traces of dirt.
  • Peel the beet and the carrot and cut them into cubes
  • Cut the orange into half

Juice the beet and the carrot

  • If using the juicer
  • Feed the beet and carrot cubes through the feeder tube
  • Juice the orange with the citrus juicer attachment
  • If using a blender
  • Add the beet and carrot cubes and blend with half a cup of water
  • You can also grate the beet and carrot using a box grater
  • Place a piece of cheesecloth on a strainer
  • Transfer the carrot and beet puree/gratings to the cheesecloth to strain
  • Squeeze the orange over the cheesecloth or use hand citrus juicer

Enjoy

  • Transfer the collected juice to a tall glass and garnish with mint leaves
  • Enjoy this vitamin rich breakfast juice with ice if desired

Method 2 - Summer beetroot juice

This one is great for those hot summer days with atropical pineapple flavor.

Preparation

  • Wash the beet thoroughly to remove all traces of dirt.
  • Remove the skin of the pineapple carefully
  • Cube the beet and the pineapple

  • Feed the beet and pineapple cubes through the feeder tube
  • If using a blender
  • Add the beet and pineapple cubes and blend with half a cup of water
  • You can also grate the beet and pineapple using a box grater
  • Place a piece of cheesecloth on a strainer
  • Transfer the pineapple and beet puree/gratings to the cheesecloth to strain

Enjoy the juice

  • Transfer the collected juice to a tall glass and garnish with mint leaves
  • Enjoy this cool tropical drink with a dash of lime and ice cubes if desired

Conclusion

Beet is such a rich source of vitamins, iron and anti-oxidants. Though you may use it in your meals, the raw juice has more benefits than when it is cooked. Don’t worry about how it will taste as you will be pleasantly surprised when you try out the above recipes.​
